MARGARET'S NOTES
· The scientific name for the bacteria is streptomyces griseus
· It is in the genus of filamentous
· And it is also in the family Streptomycetaceae
· This bacteria is a aerobic bacteria
· Also this bacteria is characterized as gram positive
· The species is found worldwide in soil
· Also the species is very important in soil ecology
· INTERESTING*:much of the characteristic earthy smell of soils arises from chemicals called geosmens given off by the streptomyces species
· Can eat almost anything
o Sugars, alcohols, amino acids, organic acids, etc.
· Streptomyces grows the fastest and best when it is put at the temperature of 26° C
· they form branching filaments of cells which become a network of strands called a mycelium
· They are also unique in the way they form spores
· By far the most successful genus in this group is Streptomyces
· Streptomyces species produce spores from aerial filaments called sporophores.
o These rise above the colony and form spores called conidia by simple cross-wall divisions of the filament.
