MARGARET'S NOTES

  INFORMATION

·         The scientific name for the bacteria is streptomyces griseus
·         It is in the genus of filamentous
·         And it is also in the family Streptomycetaceae
·         This bacteria is a aerobic bacteria
·         Also this bacteria is characterized as gram positive

HABITAT

·         The species is found worldwide in soil
·         Also the species is very important in soil ecology
·         INTERESTING*:much of the characteristic earthy smell of soils arises from chemicals called geosmens given off by the streptomyces species
·         Can eat almost anything
o   Sugars, alcohols, amino acids, organic acids, etc.
·         Streptomyces grows the fastest and best when it is put at the temperature of 26° C

·         they form branching filaments of cells which become a network of strands called a mycelium
·           They are also unique in the way they form spores
·         By far the most successful genus in this group is Streptomyces
·         Streptomyces species produce spores from aerial filaments called sporophores.
o   These rise above the colony and form spores called conidia by simple cross-wall divisions of the filament.
